This original composition is entitled "The Mill."

I started here with a sketch I made of the mill at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site in Illinois. To add to the composition I put in the deer and the large tree. Knowing that I wanted the buck to be in full antler, I had to carve the tree in fall foliage. Carving a tree in fall foliage requires that it be very open and airy. To get this look, I carved few leaves and showed the branch structure of the tree.

The detail for the mill and the tree made it a very difficult but rewarding composition.
